Relaxing Massage Vs. Theraputic Massage
The main differences between what most people would consider a Relaxing massage and Therapeutic massage therapy is the targeted nature of the massage, the level of pressure and client involvement.
Many therapeutic massages are targeted at deeper muscle groups that require greater pressure to reach. Therapeutic massages are similarly used as a tool for relief and might be recommended for weekend warriors recovering after a sports injury, athletes, truck drivers and generally active OR sedative people stuck at a desk. People who are looking for targeted relief and an accelerated post-workout recovery, therapeutic is the right fir for you!
It can be argued that every type of massage, even a massage that you’re getting purely for the relaxation benefits, is therapeutic in nature. For example, many people get full body relaxing massages to help relieve stress (mental & physical) and relieve surface tension caused by stress, even though they aren’t seeking treatment for a specific injury or condition. Relaxing massage's actually share many of the same techniques you would find in a deep tissue massage, but the long strokes are less forceful and are primarily targeted at surface tension rather than deep myofascial tissues.
